Helping A Rescue Dog Adjust

Coming Home

Before bringing your pooch inside, take him for a long walk around the block. This is important because it will help him reset and let him get his bearings.

Doggy Luxuries

Make sure you have everything your pooch needs: food, bedding, dishes, a leash, a good collar or harness, and grooming supplies. You’ll also want to get a variety of toys and yummy treats.

Schedule

In order to build a good relationship with your dog, you’ll need to make sure that he feels secure. Pets tend to feel safest when they are on a steady routine. Get your pup settled onto his normal doggy schedule for meals, walks, training, and playtime as soon as possible.

Rules

Be consistent with house rules from day one. If you don’t want your dog sleeping on the bed or hanging out on the couch, set these ground rules down immediately.

Veterinary Care

One of the first things you’ll want to do is bring your canine companion to the vet. He’ll definitely need a thorough exam. This is also a good time to get some specific feedback on your pet’s diet, exercise, and care needs.

Positive Reinforcement

Treats are a great way to win an animal’s trust. Just don’t go overboard. You don’t want your pet becoming obese! Use smaller snacks to keep that cute tail going.

Security

Your new pup may have quirks or phobias you don’t know about yet. Expect the unexpected. Get a sturdy leash and harness, and keep a good grip on your dog. Also, don’t let him run around off leash in unfenced areas. Puppyproofing is also a must.
