Allergies in Dogs

August 23, 2024

Did you know that dogs can suffer from allergies? Allergies sometimes come on unexpectedly for our canine companions. Your pet can develop allergies at any point in his life, and to a wide variety of things. Read on as a Pipe Creek, TX vet discusses allergies in dogs.

Common Allergens

Like people, dogs are often allergic to leaves, dust, mold, plants, and/or grasses. Some are allergic to specific materials, such as carpet fibers, while others react to strong fumes, like perfumes, aerosols, or cigarette smoke. Your four-legged pal may also be allergic to insect bites, or to ingredients in his food or shampoo.

Signs Of Allergies

Your canine buddy can’t tell you if something is bothering him, so you’ll need to keep an eye out for warning signs. Allergies often make dogs itchy, so you may notice your pup biting or licking himself, or rubbing his head against things. His eyes may be red and watery. Skin issues, such as flaking, can also be caused by allergies. Other symptoms include coughing, wheezing, sneezing, snoring, burping, and flatulence. In some cases, allergies manifest as stubborn ear infections that keep recurring even after treatment. Allergies can also cause tummy trouble, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If your pet is bitten by an insect that he’s allergic to, you may also notice swelling in that area. Occasionally, dogs suffer more severe reactions, such as fainting, coma, or even death. Fortunately, these incidents are few and far between.

Treatment

If you know or suspect that your furry friend has allergies, you’ll need to take him to the vet for testing. Once the culprit has been identified, your vet will be able to discuss specific treatment options. These can range from medications to customized home care instructions to special diets.

Home Care

There are some ways for you to keep your pooch more comfortable at home. If your pet is allergic to pollen, get an app that measures pollen counts, and limit his outdoor time when levels are high. Wash your pup’s bedding regularly in hot water and unscented detergent. Also, wipe down your pup’s paws and belly before bringing him inside. This will remove dust and pollen from his fur. We also recommend getting a good air purifier and dusting and vacuuming regularly.
