Make a Resolution for Your Pet’s Health This Year

August 23, 2024

Happy New Year! Are you making resolutions? Why not include your pet? Here, your Helotes, TX veterinarian offers a few suggestions on health-conscious resolutions you can make for your animal friend this year:

See your vet regularly.

One of the best things you can do for your beloved companion at every life stage is to have them examined at the vet’s office regularly. When your vet sees your pet on a regular basis, he or she can monitor their health over time and notice immediately when something isn’t right. That makes for quick treatment before health problems are allowed to progress.

It’s recommended that your pet sees their veterinarian at least twice per year. Call us today if it’s time to set up an appointment.

Feed a high-quality diet.

Good nutrition is a recipe for a healthy, happy pet. Make sure your companion is being given a high-quality, nutritionally balanced food that suits their age, weight, and breed. Feel free to ask your vet for a recommendation on a good choice. And don’t forget to inquire about the portion size that’s right for your pet—too many of our animal companions are overfed, which can easily lead to obesity.

Exercise your pet often.

Coupled with a great diet, exercise on a regular basis is the perfect way to make sure your pet maintains good health throughout 2021 and beyond. Try going on brisk walks through your neighborhood, or have a fun session at the dog park. You can simply play with a favorite toy at home, too. Getting your pet moving on a daily basis helps them stay limber and fit, and it’s good for their mental health.

Keep up with preventatives.

This year, resolve not to slack off with preventative medications. They’re very important for your pet’s health! Your companion needs essential vaccinations and booster shots to avoid contagious diseases like parvovirus and distemper. They should also be wearing pest preventatives to ward away fleas, ticks, worms, and other parasites. Talk to your vet right away if your pet is in need of preventative healthcare measures.

Maintain good dental hygiene.

Many pets suffer from bad teeth and gums, and it can lead to serious problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease. Brush your pet’s teeth with a pet-formulated toothpaste–it’s worth the effort!

To make your pet’s next office appointment, call your Helotes, TX veterinary clinic right away. We’re here for you!
