Reasons to Play With Your Dog

August 23, 2024

Does your dog sometimes come running up to you, holding his favorite toy? This is a pretty adorable way of asking for your attention. Actually, we always recommend obliging these requests. Playing isn’t just fun for our canine friends; it’s actually great for them! A Helotes, TX vet lists some reasons why below.

Exercise

One of the most important reasons to play with your four-legged friend regularly is that it’s a great way for him to get his doggy workout in. Exercise is just as important for pets as it is for people! Of course, you’ll want to ask your vet for specific advice, as not all activities are safe or suitable for every pooch. For instance, large breeds should be encouraged to jump or stand on their back legs too much, while brachycephalic pups shouldn’t overexert themselves, as they lose their breath so quickly.

Stimulation

Playing is also great for your furry friend’s mind. Dogs have to concentrate to land those tricky bounces, or to catch that ball. (There are of course some pooches that just can’t seem to get the hang of catching things, but that’s another topic.)

Beat Boredom

Dogs are very smart, and they can get quite frustrated with nothing to do all day. Playtime provides them with both entertainment and stimulation, and helps ward off the Bored Doggy Blues. This in turn can also help prevent many behavioral issues, since our canine pals often act up out of boredom.

Zoomies

A fun play session will help your furry buddy burn off his excess energy. This is particularly beneficial if you have a pooch that’s very active and mischievous. After your dog has been running around for a while, he’ll probably be a bit tired, and therefore more interested in napping than in chasing the cat around.

Bonding

Dogs make wonderful friends and companions. However, you have to nurture that friendship. Taking time to play with your pup will definitely help strengthen the bond between you.

Mood Boost

Playing with your canine pal shouldn’t only benefit him. It should be fun for you as well. Dogs are always adorable to watch when they’re bounding around happily. That joyful enthusiasm is pretty contagious. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself smiling, too!
