Life With an Active Dog

August 23, 2024

Do you have an energetic, playful pup? There are few things more adorable than dogs happily bouncing or racing around. Of course, every pooch is different. You’ll need to tailor your pet’s workout regimen to suit him. A Helotes, TX veterinarian offers some advice on this below.

Exercise

Make sure your canine buddy is getting enough exercise and stimulation. Exactly how much activity your dog needs will depend on his breed, age, and size. Large dogs may need an hour of exercise a day, while smaller pups may only need a short walk. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Training

Training is a must for any dog, but it’s especially crucial for pooches that are prone to being zoomy and perhaps a bit reactive. Make sure your pet knows—and obeys—simple commands such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down.

Schedule

Dogs tend to thrive when they are on a set schedule. Keep your dog on a regular routine for walks, meals, and playtime.

Lunging

Does your dog lunge? Ask your vet for advice on breaking this bad habit. You’ll also need to make sure he has a sturdy leash and a good collar or harness. If your furry buddy spots a squirrel, it’s important for you to be able to hang onto him!

Room To Roam

It’s best for highly active dogs to have their own yard. However, that isn’t always possible. If you don’t have a fenced yard, consider getting a petsitter or sending your pooch to doggy daycare while you’re at work. This will give him a chance to burn off that excess energy.

Toys

Playing will also help your pet burn off some of those zoomies. Offer your canine pal lots of suitable toys, and change them out regularly. If your dog is more active than you are, play games like Fetch, or hold a laser pointer for him to chase.

Puppyproofing

Playful, energetic pups often have a tendency to get into mischief. Puppyproof your home by addressing things that could endanger him. Put anything your pooch shouldn’t eat or play with out of paws reach. This includes ropes and cords,  medicine, vitamins, chemicals, plastic wrappers and ties, toxic plants, and any small or sharp objects. Ask your vet for more information.
