Keeping Your Dog Hydrated

August 23, 2024

Summer is officially here! The next few months can be lots of fun for our canine patients. However, the heat is definitely a concern for dogs. Your furry friend could get in serious trouble if he overheats! The best way to protect your pup from those scorching temperatures is to keep him properly hydrated. A Helotes, TX vet offers some tips on how to do that in this article.

Water

The most important thing here is making sure your furry buddy always has clean, fresh water. If you have a big dog, more than one pup, a yard, and/or a large house, set out more than one water station. Scrub the bowls out daily.

Broth

Sodium-free broth is a great treat for dogs. It contains electrolytes, which will help keep your pup properly hydrated. Offer your furry pal a cool bowl on hot days. Or, pour some into an ice cube tray and freeze overnight. Add bits of kibble for extra tail wags.

Fountain

Want to really get that tail going? Get your pooch a doggy fountain to splash around in. There are several types to choose from. Some run continuously, while others spray water when your pet steps on a pad. This will not only help keep your pooch hydrated, it’s also adorable for you to watch!

Water On The Go

Always bring water along for your furry best friend when you take him out and about. You can make this a bit easier by getting a collapsible plastic dish, or a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser.

Ice

Does your dog like chewing on ice cubes? While you don’t want to give your pup too many, he can have a few on scorching days.

Frozen Treats

We love a cold treat on a sweltering day … and so do our canine patients! Buy or make your four-legged pal some doggy ice cream. You can also make your own. For a base, you can use any combination of plain yogurt, ripe bananas, organic baby food, sodium-free broth, peanut butter, or pureed squash. You can add things like bacon bits, bacon grease, liver powder, shredded meat, cheese, or dog-safe fruits and veggies. Just stick to ingredients that are safe for dogs.
