How to Create a DIY Goat Playground

August 23, 2024

Do you have goats? If so, we probably don’t have to tell you that these guys are both hilarious and, well, a bit rambunctious at times. They’re also highly entertaining! One way to make things more fun for both you and Billy is to build your frisky pals a playground. A local Helotes, TX vet offers a few tips on how to do this below.

Cable Spools

Those huge cable spools used by utility companies can make great additions to your goat yard! You can get a few, and connect them with plank ‘ladders.’ You could even make pyramids out of them, though that would require a bit more muscle.

Picnic Table

A picnic table is a perfect option! There’s room for Billy and a few of his pals to play King of The Mountain.

Used Furniture

Thrift stores and yard sales can offer up a plethora of things you can add to your goat playground. An old table or end table with four legs is a great goat stand. Just bury the legs deep enough to make it stable. You can also do this with bureaus, desks, and, well, anything sturdy enough to hold some goats.

Tires

Old truck and tractor tires can be lots of fun for goats to jump on. As with the tables mentioned above, you’ll need to bury them a bit to give them some stability. Another option is to lay them flat, pack them with dirt, and stack them up into a pyramid.

Steps

Keep an eye on the classifieds, and look for people who are giving away old steps. These are perfect for goats!

Pallets

There’s almost no end to the things you can do with pallets. Stack them into pyramid shapes, or make a few separate piles and connect them with plank ladders. Just be sure to fill in the slots!

Playsets

Old slides and teeter-totters are also great fun for Billy. You can often find used ones quite cheap!

Tips

Goats are remarkably agile, but they aren’t impervious. Make sure that the things on your goat playground are sturdy, nontoxic, and free of potential hazards like nails, screws, sharp edges, and long splinters. Be sure to inspect Billy’s playthings regularly!
