9 Ways To Beat Litterbox Odors

August 23, 2024

Cats are very independent, which is one reason they make such great pets. You’ll never have to rush home to walk your feline pal: she’ll use her litterbox to see to her needs. However, your kitty’s personal bathroom can get, well, a bit stinky. Read on as a Helotes, TX veterinarian offers tips on beating litterbox smells.

Cleaning

First and foremost, be sure to keep your furry buddy’s litterbox nice and clean. We recommend scooping it every day, and changing the litter every week or so.

Plants

Plants remove many toxins and foul odors from the air. This can make a huge difference in making your home smell—and look—nice. Just be sure to stick with pet-friendly options. You can find a full list of both toxic and nontoxic plants at the ASPCA site here.

Air Fresheners

Look for air fresheners that break down odors, instead of just masking them with perfumes. Consider putting a timed-release freshener near the litterbox.

Product Options

You may find that some litters work better than others do. Feel free to experiment with different litters and boxes. Just keep your feline friend’s opinion in mind. Also, avoid clay and clumping litters if you have a kitten, at least for now.

Deodorizers

There are quite a few products on the market made specifically for masking litterbox odors,  such as liners, sprays, and powders, to name a few. Or, simply sprinkle baking soda in your cat’s litter pan.

Specialized Litterboxes

Many new litterboxes are designed are make cleaning a bit easier. These can be pricy, but if they work, it’s definitely worth the money. Read some reviews, and feel free to experiment!

Air Filters

A good air purifier is definitely a worthy investment for people with cats. This will also reduce the amount of dust and dander in the air.

Ventilation

Make sure there is good ventilation near your kitty’s powder room. If you put the litterbox in a spare bathroom, keep the fan running in that room.

Avoid Overcrowding

Do you have more than one cat? In that case, you’ve got double the cuteness … and double the odors. Cats don’t like sharing litterboxes, so you’ll need more than one. We recommend one box per feline, plus at least one extra.
