Barbeque Hazards for Dogs

August 23, 2024

Here in Texas, we definitely love our barbeques. Many of our canine patients also enjoy grilling out. Just be sure to keep your pup’s health and safety in mind. Dogs have a knack for getting into trouble. A Helotes, TX vet lists some key concerns below.

Food

Dogs are very, very enthusiastic about food, and will often snap up anything that falls to the ground. This is a huge concern at barbeques, as so many popular dishes are unsafe for them. Some dangerous foods include garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; avocados (including guacamole); grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; pitted fruits; meat on the bone; raw meat, dough, and yeast; and anything with xylitol or high amounts of salt, sugar, or fat.

Gates

Do you have a gated yard? We recommend getting a self-latching gate. Fido is a bit of an opportunist, and won’t hesitate to slip out if he gets the chance.

Heat

Heat is always a huge concern for dogs at this time of year. Make sure that Fido always has plenty of fresh water, and access to a cool, shady area. You can drop a few ice cubes into his bowl now and then. You can also get your furry friend a cooling vest. Or, soak a bandana with water and tie it around his neck.

Parasites

Fleas, ticks, and other unwanted guests may try to crash your event. Make sure that your four-legged friend is current on his vaccines and parasite control!

Chemicals

Chemicals are another concern. Keep citronella bug spray, suntan lotion, lighter fluid, and other chemicals in a spot your furry buddy can’t reach.

Trash

Our canine pals have been known to go through the trash, hoping to score some leftovers. The garbage can contain many things that aren’t safe for dogs, such as bones, toothpicks, tinfoil, can lids, and skewers, to name just a few things. Use garbage cans that your pooch can’t get into.

Booze

Beer and barbeques are a pretty solid combination. However, don’t let your four-legged buddy have any alcohol. Even small amounts can make your cute pet very, very sick!

Fire

Dogs have a habit of being underfoot. This can be dangerous when you’re grilling something! Don’t let your playful pet get too close to the grill.
